Windows Media Player 12 的界面恐怕是最显著的变化了，与 Windows 7 的界面已经很统一了，相对 11 更简洁，颜色更轻亮。
Windows Media Player 12 中已经将正在播放 Now Playing 和音乐库 Library 两种视图模式分离了。在 Now Playing 中，包含视觉特效，播放列表，音乐/视频。而 Library 中则是只有音乐/视频管理操作功能。
除了正在播放 Now Playing 和音乐库 Library 两种视图模式分离之外，还有一些很不错的小功能，比如：鼠标停留时，15 秒音乐预览；音乐、视频和照片三类分类同时显示在左边。
Windows Media Player 12 支持 H.264 视频、AAC 音频、Xvid 和 DivX 视频，以及 Windows Media Player 11 已经支持的格式。这意味着，在 Windows 7 中，我们基本可以用Windows Media Player 12 播放主流的格式了，无需自己另外下载解码器了。
Windows Media Player 12 还支持浏览本地网络中其他用户的 iTunes 音乐库，但苹果没有将其 FairPlay DRM 授权给第三方，因此 WMP 12 不支持 DRM 保护的 iTunes 内容。
同样，Play To 也支持 Digital Living Network Alliance v1.5 设备，功能和上面介绍的类似，但如果该设备无法识别文件格式，WMP 会自动转码。
与 Windows Live Essentails 类似，Windows Media Player 也是微软提升 Windows 7 用户体验的重要产品。Windows 7 目前为止给人的印象是不错的。
